Recently, I came across an ad for second chance jobs for felons.  I thought, “hmmm, felons aren’t the only people needing second chance jobs”. Apparently though, that’s the general thinking, by the looks of the list of second chance job opportunities for felons on the internet.  My feeling, though,  is that they’re forgetting about an entire population of people that have been phased out or forced to retire early; or the veterans returning from war; and what about the newly divorced/widowed women that have been busy being housewives for 15-20 years, suddenly in a position where they HAVE to work?


Who Needs A Second Chance Job & Why?

  • Convicted felons.  First, let’s take a look at the obvious, the felons.  People make mistakes, right?  of course they do and when they do, they need to be held responsible.  But, should they be punished for indefinitely for something they may have done when they were young and stupid?  I mean, they’ve paid for the crime by doing the time and where I come from, everyone deserves a second chance.  But, that’s not always the case for convicted felons.  Businesses don’t want to take a chance on them, especially when handling money and possibly expensive equipment.  I agree, careful consideration should be taken; however, I feel the person should not be judged and condemned to unemployment for all eternity because they checked a box on an application.  At least grant them an interview and see how qualified they are and if they’d fit in with the place of business, BEFORE condemning them.

  • Phased out or forced early retirement.  Even the best employees worry about their job security from time to time. In fact, a recent Gallup poll found that only 58 percent of U.S. full- and part-time workers are completely satisfied with their job security. There’s a reason for that!  Older employees are often offered early retirement incentive packages that trade off an increased pension benefit or severance package in exchange for an employee agreeing to voluntarily retire early.  Often times the company will, then, hire younger and inexperienced employees that they can justifiably pay less.  This can leave a 50-something year old in a precarious situation when it comes to finding employment.


  • Veterans.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statics, there were 495,000 unemployed veterans in 2015.  More than half were age 45 or older. The statistics didn’t show any greater unemployment rate for disabled vets than veterans with no disability.  Veterans struggle to gain employment because of culture gaps between civilian society and their military pasts, as well as a lack of seamless integration among Veteran care programs.  Years ago companies and small businesses would give priority to veterans to fill open positions. Unfortunately for Veterans, things have changed. Interviewers rarely ask about military experience and when Vets bring it up, it seems to be of no real interest to the employer.


  • Divorce or widowed/”at home spouse”.  This usually means the wife as the “stay at home spouse” (but not always). The problem being, the wife had left the job market after marrying, never entered it, or was only connected to it through part-time or volunteer work.  Divorce typically means lifestyle changes for both parties, requiring additional income to support 2 households.  And, finding a job with little or no experience can be more than challenging.

  • The Military for felons.  With U.S’s increasing military involvement in Afghanistan and the Middle East, felons have better opportunities to join the armed services. According to CNN, the need for soldiers has resulted in felony waivers for recruits convicted of assault, drug possession, burglary etc.

  • Construction for felons.  Compared with those of other fields, background checks of the construction industry are not as strict.  Given a willingness to devote your time and brush up on your skills, you can earn very good earnings, especially in the field of carpentry, electricity or HVAC installation.

  • Hospitality for anyone.  Hospitality jobs, such as catering, waitress or waiter positions, hotel reception, department store, etc… can be very accommodating for just about any background.
